Although we here at Salt of the Earth have been creating natural deodorants since 1993, it's definitely true to say that over the last few years there has been an increase in interest in not only natural but also vegan deodorant formulas.

This is great news, because it's absolutely possible to choose a good deodorant that is free from potentially controversial chemicals and animal products and still delivers the results you are looking for.

Your skin absorbs any product you put on it so choosing a formulation that doesn't contain ingredients such as parabens or aluminum chlorohydrate - ingredients that have been labelled as potentially harmful - can only be a good thing.

From listening to our customers, we know that some people experience less irritation from using natural formulas almost immediately. For others, the benefit will be more long term; the fact that they are reducing their chemical load on their bodies may benefit their health in the long run, just like a healthy diet would.

What are the key ingredients in natural deodorants for men?

When you look at a deodorant, you want to have a look at what we call the INCI list, which is the ingredient list. This HAS to be present on the product or the box for it to be sold in the UK.

When glancing over the INCI list, you want to recognise most of the ingredients listed. Common ingredients can include items like baking soda, coconut oil, eucalyptus, tea tree oil...

Some natural ingredients do have chemical sounding names. Take for instance Capric Triglyceride, an ingredient present in our stick deodorant formulations. It sounds like it's not natural, but actually it is! It's derived from coconut oil and glycerin, and is considered an excellent soothing and hydrating ingredient.

So, if you're not sure about an ingredient, you can quickly google it to find out whether it's natural or not. A faster way to be assured that the product is truly natural is to look for products that are CERTIFIED natural. How to transition to a natural men's deodorant?

When you've been using 'normal' deodorants and antiperspirants, transitioning to a natural deodorant - whether it is a spray deodorant, stick deodorant or roll-on deodorant - can create a bit of a smell initially. This seems ironic considering deodorants should eliminate bad odours! However, for some people, there is an acclimatisation period where the body has to get used to the natural formulation.
